While you were sleeping, history was being made. Elon Musk was live tweeting the SpaceX launch (with the epic hashtag #DragonLaunch) and I was sitting in bed with my fingers crossed. And then, at 3:44 am a private company successfully launched a rocket bound for the International Space Station.
Despite aborting launch in the last half second a few days ago, it looks like SpaceX is now 3-for-3:
1. Successful first test of its rocket.
2. Successful first launch of its Dragon spacecraft into orbit.
3. Successful first launch of its Dragon spacecraft to the ISS.
While docking at the ISS in a few days remains a challenge, the Dragon spacecraft has succeeded in activating its solar array. As Elon Musk tweeted: “Feels like a giant weight just came off my back.”
Since reading a piece on Tesla Motors in Wired almost two years ago, I’ve been crushy on Elon Musk. I’m thinking about pasting a picture of him on my Wheaties box for inspiration because he is a HERO. (This would, however, require me to buy a box of Wheaties first…)
Congratulations to Elon Musk and the SpaceX team. Way to start the day off with a bang.
